"I was ready to skip out of the summer season, with its coconut oil tanning lotions and water-splashing amusement parks and jump right into an autumn leaf pile..."

This is the beginning of Mark's story, "Flight of the Wombat II", which was chosen as first place winner in WordTrip.com's annual short story contest.

March 25th, 2009- The conference is a-comin'!
Written by Mark L. Ortler
The 2009 Pikes Peak Writer's Conference is coming in April and I am excited about this year. While I won't be a presenter this year (maybe next year) I do have something to look forward to...I was chosen as FIRST PLACE WINNER in the Paul Gillette writing competition for my Mainstream Novel, "Crossing Boundaries."

This is exciting on several fronts, the first being the almighty validation that all writers crave. It also means I get my choice of editors and agents to pitch the novel. It's pretty darn awesome.

But there's no time to sit back and bask in the glow. It actually means I have a lot of work to do. I have to get my pitch ready, work up a pre-marketing plan, polish the synopsis and cover letter, complete another edit of the novel, oh yeah... and buy a new tie.

So, to all my well-wishers out there, along with all of you who've given me  support while I whittled away at the book, I send a heartfelt THANK YOU! Now I'm off to buy a tie.

I wonder if fish ties have gone out of style?
